Most Amazing Deserts

When talking about deserts, most people will soon think of isolation and death. In fact, with the extreme hot, fierce sand storms and huge space, deserts possess great threats to those who want to explore such destinations. However, not many people have imagined deserts as cool and green spots. As a matter of fact, deserts have in themselves a lot of amazing features that may surprise any explorers. Following are some of the world’s most famous deserts.

 

1. Taklamakan

Taklamakan is a sand desert that ranks the 15th in area among desert outside the polar regions. The desert occupies 270.000 km2 in the Tarim Basin, China. In 2008, the desert went through a terrible snow storm and was covered by snow in 11 consecutive days.

 

2. Lencois Maranhenses

Located in Maranhao State in the north coast of Brazil, the national park Lencoiis Maranhenses covers 320 km2. With the white sand dunes and sea water ponds, this desert is one of the most unique and beautiful deserts in the world.

 

3. Salar de Uyuni

Salar is a huge salt desert in Atiplano plateau of Bolivia. Salar is a grand and rather flat desert which can reflect sunlight like a mirror. Many ponds in the desert has strange water color due to different minaerals.

 

4. Sahara el Beyda

One of the most attractive beauty spots of Farafra is the White Desert which is also known as Sahara el Beyda in Egyptian. This desert is creamy white with numerous stones formed by sand storms.

 

5. Atacama Desert

Atacama occupies a large area of Chili on the coast between Arica and Antofagasta. This desert was once recognized by the Guiness as world’s driest desert. However, many creatures still survive thanks to their water accumulation and fog from the sea.

 

6. Namib

Located in the South Africa, Namib is an impressive desert though it is not so as Sahara. Namib has world’s highest sand dunes with the height of 300m. Besides, the existence of elephants is also a distinctive feature of Namib. Being the oldest desert, Namib has many rare and precious animals and plants.

 

7. Simpson

Located in Australia, Simpson is one of the four biggest deserts namely Sturt’s Stoney, Tanami, Great Victoria and Simpson. Simpson is known as “The Red Desert” thanks to its unique red sand colour.

8. The South Pole


No one can live in the South Pole due to its bitter coldness. The lowest temperature may reach -89.4oC. This is also the most humid as well as driest place in the world. The South Pole desert is one of the cold deserts with numerous galaxies.

 

9. Sahara

With the area of 8.6 km2, Sahara is the world’s biggest desert which covers most of the North Africa. The extreme length is 4,800 km form west to east and 1,200 km form north to south. Sahara covers most of the area including Mauritania, West Sahara, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Chad, Niger and Mali.
