The average biker in the UK has a multitude of traits which are not necessarily demonstrated in other bikers across the world. The profile of the 21st century UK biker is arguably echoed in other countries like the USA, where the motorcycle industry had determined much the same profile. Apparently, the image of the Hells Angel, with a free spirit, riding off in packs is something that has gone away, which comes as no surprise in the overall aging populations of these nations. Today’s biker turns out to be a 40-something, middle-class citizen. Married, usually a professional and a family man, he rides twice per week, owns a car, and uses his bike for recreation, not necessarily to make a social statement.
In a recent survey, results concluded that some 50% have a tattoo, and one-third wear beards, yet, only 7% have long hair or a pony tail. Some 60% surveyed had a managerial role at work, taking home a high wage. In a sense, this is not a surprise, because a good motorbike is not cheap. This is an expensive hobby, and few are really geared to do either their own maintenance or to trick out their bikes themselves. So it takes money to pay for it.
Most interestingly, the survey concludes that the average biker likes the quiet ride of the Honda vs. the loud noise of the Harley, and puts about 7,500 miles per year on the bike. Rather humorously, the article notes that there is a direct link between having a motorbike and a mid-life crisis as most bikers have only been riding for two years. This might be a good conclusion, except for the fact that many younger people, with the additional expenses of biking insurance and equipment, along with raising a family and supporting a house, might be deferring their bike riding until they can afford it.
Similar observations have been made in the USA. In a great article by Marti Attoun at American Profile, the Motorcycle Industry Council has found that on average, a motorcycle owner in America is 41. The fact is, riders in this bracket have the money to buy the machines they want, and keep them up.
