What Does it Mean to Be Bilingual?

What are the advantages of growing up with two or more languages? Does bilingualism help or hinder the mental and educational development of children? How can children be helped in their language development?

In the last three decades there have been a large number of books and research papers written on the subject of educational and mental development of children who grow up using more than one language. This research is almost unanimously shown that children who are bilingual more creative and successful than other children.

In many parts of the world, children grow up using more than one language. When the language on the streets and the markets is different from the language at home, children start using these other languages easily. In many parts of the world, people continue to use these different languages through to their adult life. Sometimes the language of a person’s religion is different from the language used in the home, in many children around the world have lessons to learn the particular language of their relation.

In most cities, many different languages are spoken. This is particularly true for other cities in Europe and America, because people from many different parts of the world have come to these places to make a new life for themselves. Some children go through life speaking more than one language quite naturally as they grew up. But in a lot of cases because children are learning a different language at school, they may lose the language of their parents.

There are even some parents who can afford to send their children to another country so that they can learn a second language. In these cases the parents are usually interested in children learning a very particular language. This may be to help them at home, in their religion, or in future business plans.

With the growing number of people seeking a new life in different parts of the world, bilingualism is becoming much more common. It is up to the family, and the parents to teach their children a second language. This will have a huge benefit on all children as they grow up and take their place in the world. If you are thinking about teaching your child a second language, I would highly recommend that you start with Spanish. This is one of the easiest languages for English-speaking people to pick up, and it is spoken in over 20 countries around the world. I have a great resource available for anybody interested in learning Spanish. http://www.squidoo.com/Learn-Spanish-speaking
